1. Keep it short
Many visitors will arrive at your site by typing your web address therefore keep it short so that people can remember it and there is least possibility of any typo errors.
2. Be simple and clear
Your domain should be easy to remember and easy to spell.
3. Avoid numbers and hyphens
If possible, your domain should not have numbers and hyphens to avoid confusing it with other similar domains without numbers and hyphens, which may lead to loss in traffic.
4. Think keywords
If your required domain is not available, try adding a keyword to it.
5. Buy singular and plural versions
Sometimes we buy domains which are singular or plural in word. Since domains are no more expensive now, try buying the same domain in singular and plural versions. As an example, if you want a domain like www.happydomains.com, also buy www.happydomain.com. One with the letter ‘s’ at the end and the other without it and point one of them to the other. Do not physically host the same site on two or more domains, this will lead to Duplicate Content Penalty by search engines.

A simple custom website design with a slider, 5 – 10 pages, landing page development, and an inquiry form. How much would it cost and how much time would be required? This is what my friend “Jack” asked the CEO of a so called professional web development company. The answer was encouraging and quite reassuring, he said that developing such low cost website design was no issue for them and that they had probably developed hundreds of such websites.
This conversation took place in the office of a local professional web development company which was referred to Jack by a friend of his. The cost of the custom website development , supposedly a low cost web design was agreed at 500$ all inclusive, to be developed in around ten days. Here I must add the reason for urgency of this project. Jack has been in the textile trading and indenting business for quite some time. He never really felt the need of a website as he had some good business coming in through his regular / loyal customers. It was only that he had to attend this textile trade fair in Dubai in about three weeks time and having business cards and other business promotion material without a website address did not seem a good idea. So basically he just needed a low cost website design developed before he went to Dubai.
Anyways to cut it short, the first three days passed without much action. On the fourth day the professional web development company sent over some custom website design mock ups of which the approved one still needed some adjustments. Meanwhile Jack had delivered the content text and images for the website. The fifth and sixth day were a weekend, on the seventh day the company called in to inform that their developer had some emergency and the project could be delayed a little bit. By the end of the committed ten days timeline there was no trace of Jack’s website. After this the professional web development company went into a complete radio silence. They would not answer Jack’s calls or emails and on visiting their office Jack came to know that the company had moved its office to some unknown destination. This news was enough to really upset Jack as less than a week’s time was left in Jack’s departure to Dubai.
In the end Jack had to leave for Dubai without a website, which actually reflected bad on Jack’s company profile.
Moral: Do not hire any professional web development services without a written contract. Don’t just trust hearsay until you have done a bit of research yourself and are satisfied about the professional competence of a service provider. When you need a website developed urgently never go for a custom website design development rather chose the option of ready to use professional website templates. This would save you both time and money.
Generally it is thought that for a professional website development company creating a website would not be a big deal. Any company providing web development services would finish off a job within no time once the client provides the general directions. This, however, is a common misconception. The following points would help you understand the reason why creating a website takes so much time.
Creating a Custom Website Design
The first phase in developing a website is creating a website design. Most people look for web design services that offer affordable website design. Mainly there are two options when you talk about website designs, the ready to use website design templates and the custom website designs.
The difference between the two is the cost factor and the customize-ability of the later according to the client’s specifications. The ready to use website design templates cost a lot less than the custom website designs. Another misconception which a lot of people believe is that ready made templates are inferior by any way than customized designs. In fact, most of these ready to use templates are designed professionally better than some custom designs.
If you go for a custom design it would cost you more both in terms of time and money. The designing process usually involves having two or more sample designs being created for the client to chose from. Even after choosing a design you still may want to make some changes which again would take more time for the design to be finalized.
Creating HTML Pages
Custom website designs are initially created in PSD format and have to be converted to HTML in order to be served over the internet. Greater the number of pages more time it takes to convert them to HTML. On the other hand the ready to use website design templates are already built using HTML and do not need further conversion.
Content Creation and Collection
Somethings are easier said than done, creating content for your website may seem a relatively easy job. However, it is a commonly observed that most of the times if this part is left for the client to furnish, it usually takes a lot more time than anticipated. Some companies offer content creation as part of their website development services.
There are numerous ways to create a website, however, the process which would be discussed through this article pertains to the traditional way of creating a website.
The PSD or the Custom Website Design
The first step in creating a website is to design the landing page. Most of the web design companies do this by using adobe photoshop. The design details the general outlay of the website including the landing page and the inner pages. At this stage a professional website designer aims to create how the page would look like, this includes how the icons would look like, the header, the footer, the columns, the positioning of sliders, positioning of text areas, positioning of images and selecting the color theme of the page. In technical terms such creation would be termed as a custom website design.
Converting PSD to HTML
Websites or web pages to be served on the internet need to be built in HTML, so the next step in creating a website asks for the PSD or the initial custom website design to be translated into HTML. This requires a good grasp of HTML along with CSS. CSS is used along with HTML to give the website the required look. CSS code manages the color schemes of the different sections and the appearance of text throughout the website. CSS code once written can be used variably on different pages of the website to get the desired feel and look.
Populating Website Content
Website content refers to both the text and graphics that have to be inserted in the HTML file / page at appropriate places. This has to be done with great care and a high level of precision so that the formatting of text and images looks smooth and seamless. It is highly advisable during the development process to keep testing your website pages over different browsers to see how they look,,secondly to locate any anomaly and fix it early.
This is an important step in creating your website. In this step you name your website and check if the name is available. For instance your website name would appear as shown in the following link http://www.yourwebsitename.com/. Domain names are unique and have to carefully thought out.
Hosting your website
Now for the last step of how to create your website you would need to host it over the internet. There are a lot many companies offering hosting services, choose a company that offers a competitive price and has a good repute. Having purchased the hosting service now you are ready to launch your website. This would require you to have some knowledge of how to upload your website files using utilities such as cPanel or some other FTP.
The process of how to create a website may or may not look complicated, however, for practical purposes it does require a certain amount of technical skill without which you would not be able to launch a professionally designed website.
The good news is that there are a lot many professional website development companies out there who would be willing to offer you their expertise at a fraction of the effort and time you would be investing in creating a website on your own.
Furthermore some web development services have a comprehensive solution by offering ready to use website design templates along with domain and hosting services.
